Not everyone wants to hear their dentist tell them, "You need a root canal," but if this is your experience, don't panic!

If this is your first root canal procedure, you may have a lot of questions about what to expect and how to prepare for your root canal. At Natural Dentistry of North Texas, we believe that patient education is the first step to any dental procedure; it's easier to feel comfortable when you understand each step of the process and can anticipate what your dentist does.

The first thing to bear in mind is that pain is not going to be as big of an issue as you may have feared. Most patients who come to see us are already experiencing tooth pain so severe that only a root canal can alleviate their discomfort. We practice dental sedation and will numb the area so you won't feel any pain during the procedure.

What Does a Root Canal Do?

First things first, it's essential to understand the process of a root canal. When you have a tooth infection, it's critical to remove all pieces of the infected pulp so that your pain decreases, and Dr. Randhawa does not need to extract the tooth. She will clean out your tooth and make sure to remove all bacteria and particles before sealing it to prevent another infection.

Depending on the severity of the infection, Dr. Randhawa may either use tooth-colored fillings to seal the hole, or she may recommend a dental crown to protect your tooth. Tooth crowns are versatile dental prosthetics that keep your teeth strong and healthy and restore your ability to chew.

How to Prepare for Your Root Canal

You should anticipate the root canal taking a few hours, so take the rest of the day off so you can relax and heal. Please let our dental team know how we can make your treatment as comfortable as possible, whether it involves listening to music or watching TV.

To minimize discomfort, Dr. Randhawa will use topical gel and local anesthesia to numb the site so that you won't feel anything. (Yay!)

Dr. Randhawa will  use dental technology like digital imaging and root end locator  to help guide her as she works on removing pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the Root Canal System. She uses Rotary Instruments that work in a very quick and efficient manner to make it a less time consuming visit. After thorough cleaning, Root canal is filled with an inert material and hollow tooth is restored with a core build up material to seal and retain the tooth. Your Mesquite dentist will let you know if a dental crown is necessary, which will require making an impression of your tooth to custom fabricate your tooth crown.

The process is pretty straightforward, pain-free, and stress-free. Don't hesitate to come to see us if you experience dental pain, and remember, root canals are not scary when performed by an experienced dentist who cares.
